Whatever became of the giant hats?

Whatever became of the giant hats? I don't mean: why have they gone out of fashion. I mean: what actually happened to them all? Imagine trying to throw away a hat this size! They wouldn't fit in a bin! And the quantity of gigantic millinery! Are there whole landfills stuffed with hats?
And how about closet space, back in the day? I mean, where did they keep their hats? Can't you just imagine the space these things must have taken up?

Can you imagine fitting through doorways in these? This next one, I imagine you'd have to duck a little:
And the neck muscles you had to have to support some of these! Though this one looks like maybe it had some aerodynamic quality that helped it stay afloat on its own, like a kite:
And, you know, if you didn't own a really big hat, you could always make one, out of household objects:
HAVE A GREAT DAY!

I am making you a very, very special hat this year for your upcoming birthday composed entirely of straw, swiss cheese, cranberries, sandpaper, Goldbrick hot fudge sauce, three silver forks, a glittery disco ball, and ostrich nostrils. You are going to LOVE it....LOVE it!

I love that last picture. Poor girl tried so hard! :)

You know, I DO wonder where all those huge hats have all got to now...

I just cracked up! haha. And I'm gonna admit, I actually liked a few of them. I think I could pull off a giant hat.

These hats are fantastic! I'm with you - I'm wondering how on earth people stored those things. Old houses are notorious for having such bitty little closets; perhaps that's why some hats had to do double duty as baskets! :)

I just drooled over every one of these (with the exception of the basket, maybe). i love hats big time and retro hats are WIN!

Well, I'm sure all these hats were reduced, reused and recycled into baskets, furniture, and household ornaments. ^_^
These are halarious! Did people really wear these?! Ha, fun stuff. :D
Hmm, a short amusing post like this is refreshing after the hours I've spent reading random whanot on the computer.

I'd never thought about it before, but now I'm dying to know what happened to them all!

My mother in law brought huge, floaty hats stored in boxes with her when she moved from Norway to the US in the early 60s. They were all completely flattened during the boat ride. She had insurance, but the insurance company decided that they would reimburse her per pound lost. Not a good deal, ha ha.

Ooo, good point -- where did they KEEP them?? I live in a Vurry Old House and have, like, zero closet space.

And I agree with everyone else. That basket one rocks.

my question: why did they go out of style? That's it-- I'm wearing a Tupperware adorned with like plastic flowers and...like...fluffy things. It will be a hit, trust me.

this isn't about hats, but... if you're an author, I need some advice. Please? I'm sure you get this a lot, though.

I LOVE the giant hats. I love any hats. I yearn for a time when folks didn't go to get groceries in their pjs. sigh.
